The most certain way to succeed is always to try just once more.</blockquote>As the long-term Chief Operating Officer of the GT family, Stephen recounted in his interview that the early period of GreenTomato was not easy. He equates running and growing a start-up company to coding as there is a lot of trial and error on the path to success. During the low days of the past 20 years, when he encountered failure and frustration he reveals that the crucial tip is to uncover the mistakes and tackle the problems directly, similar to running a debugging process.Other than tackling the technical issues and being the company's COO, Stephen gained management skills that cannot be learnt from any university. He acknowledges that IT talent is a scarce commodity, therefore, talent cultivation has become vitally important. Stephen is keen on nurturing young IT talents to bridge the skill gaps needed to deliver the products of our company.Stephen’s first job after graduating CUHK was as a backend developer. He soon learnt about the world of the Internet and it was this interest in this sector that became his push factor for establishing a start-up company. He has always desired to bring GreenTomato onto the international stage. Stephen is a bachelor holder of Computer Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and has over 30 years of experience in software development.Stephen emphasises the importance of maintaining mental and physical health and is a believer in promoting work-life balance. Maintaining this balance is essential for keeping a fresh and clear mind needed to tackle everyday tasks. As GT's technical lead, Stephen has to face different challenges every day. Through encountering these difficulties, stress may build up. Without proper stress management, it is easy to quickly burnout. Therefore, Stephen believes mindfulness is essential to keeping a clear and fresh mind. Bringing balance to his work and life provides Stephen with a healthier and more enjoyable lifestyle which benefits GreenTomato as a whole as he firmly believes that a team of bright and refreshed minds enables GT to bring even more innovation to the marketplace.

GreenTomato has grown from a humble team of 10 dedicated members to include branches in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Taipei that have over 400 team members between them. When you have this overall information in your mind, imagine what role you could fulfill, and how you can best showcase your excellence and ambition.</li><li>Secondly, make eye contact with the interviewers. Be confident in yourself, and having a good attitude is as important as any skill set or prior experience in GT. Please let us know what incentivises you, and what you feel your learning needs may be. We wish for both of us to have takeaways during this process.</li><li>Next, our interviewers may list some scenarios in order to assess your problem-solving and communication skills. We appreciate applicants spending time and energy on taking courses to learn theoretical knowledge and develop new skill sets. Moving from ‘zero’ to ‘one’ is not only a step but a journey which can be full of challenges, failure and the unexpected. From first Hong Kong and then to Guangzhou, our founders Johnny and Stephen have invested significant time and effort in establishing a great working environment and a powerful team. Through attaining that experience, they have learnt a significant amount about how to find the right teammates, which has aided them when contemplating new ventures outside Hong Kong in the future.The first tip from them is that understanding the local culture is the most important step before developing anything else. The local culture influences people’s living and working style, the business workflow, and the logic in all rules, laws and regulations. If you intend to start a business in a new location, you are reliant largely on using the resources available there.When Johnny and Stephen were preparing to set up a new GT office in GZ, they were not familiar with local culture, so they had to explore everything from a blank sheet. They worked with a group of local people and established the business foundation, but in the end they had to rebuild everything from scratch since they had disagreements with respect to product copyright. After going through that, they realized the importance of copyright application and IP registration, and had learnt to prepare registrations well so they can protect their own rights and benefits. China has changed a lot through the past decade, and the local culture has also. Even though culture is a powerful effect that shapes peoples’ habits, mindsets and core values, cultural phenomena can be reformed over time if people are willing to make changes. Therefore, Johnny and Stephen emphasize the importance of a person’s attitude and willingness, and they fully understand that time is needed to absorb new visions and values.Through the journey, they have bonded together a team of GREAT GTers in GZ who have a strong sense of responsibility and effective technical skills. These GREAT GTers have proven that diversified outcomes can be created with the same cultural background. Some of them have worked for GT for around 10 years, or have returned to GT after integrating new perspectives and learning from outside. Stephen understands that people have different goals for their careers, and maintains that keeping a positive relationship with teammates is valuable as they can always provide a GREAT support to us.Our leaders learnt valuable lessons while setting up new branches away from home. We wish their experience and sharing can be useful to anyone who is ambitious to do any experimental growth of their business.
